16th ANNUAL REGIONAL MODEL BRIDGE CONTEST

On Thursday, March 16, 2017 the Southwest Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers held the 16th Annual Regional Model Bridge Contest at Missouri Southern State University in the Billingsley Student Center from 6 to 8 pm.

Bridges are designed and built by high school students using 3/32” x 3/32” lengths of Basswood. The bridge specifications require a maximum weight of 25 grams with maximum dimensions of length 350 millimeter by width 75 millimeter by height 100 millimeter.

The top three finishers receive cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25 respectively.

First place was Brian Hughey a freshman at Church Alive Christian School. His bridge weighed 22.29 grams and carried 87.4 pounds for an efficiency ratio of 1,778.55. His school sponsor is John Koehler.

Second place was Allec Uber a junior at Carl Junction High School. His bridge weighed 24.57 grams and carried 85.0 pounds for an efficiency ratio of 1,569.2.

Third place was Hope Birkinsha a senior at Church Alive Christian School. Her bridge weighed 22.73 grams and carried 65.0 pounds for an efficiency ratio of 1,297.12. Her school sponsor is John Koehler.

Seventy-seven students from 11 area high schools participated in the contest. The average efficiency ratio was 602.7.

Brian Hughey and Allec Uber are now eligible to participate in the International Bridge Building Contest to be held in Dallas, TX on April 22, 2017.

The Southwest Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers congratulates all participants for their outstanding model bridges.
