The Model Bridge Contest

Each student contestant will design and build a truss bridge using 3/32” x 3/32” lengths of basswood.  On the day of the contest the truss bridges will be loaded to failure and ranked on the basis of highest efficiency ratio (maximum load divided by the weight of the bridge).  The Southwest Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers is pleased to sponsor the Annual Model Bridge Contest for Southwest Missouri area students.

The High School Division of the Model Bridge Contest

For the High School division (grades 9 – 12) there will be a $5.00 entry fee per bridge.  The entry fee will not be refunded.  The contest is intended for individuals.  Teams will be permitted at this contest, but only individuals may advance to the International Bridge Building Contest.  Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three contestants; $100 – 1st place, $50 – 2nd place, $25 – 3rd place.  A $500 cash scholarship will be awarded to the 1st place winner.  The scholarship will be paid upon confirmation of attendance to any Missouri college or university immediately following graduation from high school.  If the winner is in grades 9-11 the scholarship will be held until the student graduates high school.  The top two contestants will be eligible to participate in the International Bridge Building Contest, see http://bridge.phys.iit.edu for photos and other information.

If any of your students are interested, please complete the registration form and return it along with the entry fee, to the address shown on the form.  We will distribute bridge kits upon receipt of your entry.  Students may begin their design and layout work at any time.
