2015 SWMO MSPE Regional Model Bridge Contest


On Thursday, March 26, 2015 the Southwest Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers held the 14th Annual Regional Model Bridge Contest at Missouri Southern State University in the Billingsley Student Center from 6 to 8 pm.

Bridges are designed and built by high school students using 3/32" x 3/32" lengths of Basswood. The bridge specifications require a maximum weight of 25 grams with maximum dimensions of length 350 millimeter by width 75 millimeter by height 100 millimeter.

The top three finishers receive cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25 respectively.

First place was Naomi Reeves a senior at Church Alive Christian School. Her bridge weighed 20.23 grams and carried 76.0 pounds for an efficiency ratio of 1704.1. Her school sponsor is John Koehler.

Second place was Trent Tate a freshman at Ballard High School. His bridge weighed 14.92 grams and carried 52.6 pounds for an efficiency ratio of 1599.1. His school sponsor is James Hurst.

Third place was Allec Uber a freshman at Carl Junction High School. His bridge weighed 23.78 grams and carried 82.5 pounds for an efficiency ratio of 1573.7. His school sponsor is Natalie Hughes.

One hundred twenty-seven students from 13 area high schools participated in the contest. The average efficiency ratio was 688.4.

Naomi Reeves and Trent Tate are now eligible to participate in the 38th Annual International Bridge Building Contest to be held in Portland, Oregon on April 25, 2015.

The 2013 SWMO regional model bridge contest took place on March 14 at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, MO.

Statistics from the Event.

    • 142 contestants, includes the High School and Challenge divisions
    • 80 Highschool entries, includes 17 disqualified bridges
    • 62 Challenge entries, includes 6 disqualified bridges and 3 non-ranked bridges

The maximum weight supported by a qualified bridge was 111.0 lbs and was constructed by Allison Knewston, a Senior at Franklin Tech.  The sponsor for Ms. Knewston was Deonna Anderson.

2012 SWMO Regional Model Bridge Contest

The 2012 SWMO regional model bridge contest took place on March 22 at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, MO.

Statistics from the Event.

    • 127 contestants, includes the High School and Challenge divisions
    • 75 Highschool entries, includes 19 disqualified bridges
    • 43 Challenge entries, includes 9 disqualified bridges

The maximum weight supported by a qualified bridge was 88.2 lbs and was constructed by Allison Knewston, a Junior at Joplin High School.  The sponsor for Ms. Knewston was Deonna Anderson.

First place was Caleb Skocy a senior at Rich Hill High School.  His bridge weighed 17.39 grams and carried 86.9 pounds for an efficiency ratio of 2,266.7.  His school sponsor is Phil Stump.

Second place was Holly Tate a freshman at Ballard High School.  Her bridge weighed 19.01 grams and carried 63.6 pounds for an efficiency ratio of 1,517.5.  Her school sponsor is James Hurst.

Third place was JayLynn Armstrong a freshman at Church Alive Christian School.  Her bridge weighed 24.61 grams and carried 77.0 pounds for an efficiency ratio of 1,419.22.  Her school sponsor is John Koehler.

Seventy-six students from 9 area high schools participated in the contest.  The average efficiency ratio was 645.2.

Caleb Skocy and Holly Tate are now eligible to participate in the 37th Annual International Bridge Building Contest to be held in Chicago, Illinois on May 10, 2014.
