15th ANNUAL REGIONAL MODEL BRIDGE CONTEST

On Thursday, March 17, 2016 the Southwest Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers held the 15th Annual Regional Model Bridge Contest at Missouri Southern State University in the Billingsley Student Center from 6 to 8 pm.

Bridges are designed and built by high school students using 3/32” x 3/32” lengths of Basswood. The bridge specifications require a maximum weight of 25 grams with maximum dimensions of length 350 millimeter by width 75 millimeter by height 100 millimeter.

The top three finishers receive cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25 respectively.

First place was Hope Birkinsha a senior at Church Alive Christian School. Her bridge weighed 21.93 grams and carried 80.0 pounds for an efficiency ratio of 1,654.69. Her school sponsor is John Koehler.

Second place was Andrea Luarca a senior at Church Alive Christian School. Her bridge weighed 20.46 grams and carried 69.6 pounds for an efficiency ratio of 1,543.01. Her school sponsor is John Koehler.

Third place was Jacob Lett a senior at Neosho High School. His bridge weighed 22.35 grams and carried 73.9 pounds for an efficiency ratio of 1,499.80. His school sponsor is Mark Preston.

Sixty-nine students from 11 area high schools participated in the contest. The average efficiency ratio was 637.5.

Hope Birkinsha and Andrea Luarca are now eligible to participate in the 38th Annual International Bridge Building Contest to be held in Chicago, Illinois on May 7, 2016.
